I mean, the one thing that has truly wowed me on PS5 was the Matrix Awakens tech demo, but let's be honest - those visuals came at the cost of heavy pop-in and a wobbly 30fps. And the PS5 looks to be driving this insanity to whole new levels as those people won't settle for anything less than native 4K/60 fps on every new game while refusing to appreciate that those metrics will result in a visual makeup that will not be substantially different to the PS4 (or the PS3 for that matter). The PS4 never felt like a console where any developer was willing to push the envelope of what it could do visually, because they were too fearful of being savaged by the extremely vocal and condescending minority of frame-rate fanatics. As a result, the PS4 and especially the PS5 have felt like little more than minor iterations on the PS3, and this isn't rose-tinted glasses speaking - I still buy and play used games for the PS3 on a regular basis. I remember DF's original coverage of Far Cry 3 back in the day being a kind of watershed moment in that the console performance was savaged so heavily that it was the beginning of the end of developers trying to push console hardware to its limits. It's telling that the later PS4/XO release held up so well visually and that it only ran at 30fps. settings at the time, but I had the opportunity to play the PS3 version recently and while the frame rate problems are apparently, it's a visual revelation for the platform, looking closer to a eighth-gen game. I personally experienced Far Cry 3 first on PC and could play it at near max. Games like Mortal Kombat on the Master System, Doom on the SNES, Tony Hawk's 4 on the PSX all pushed their host hardware in interesting ways, and low resolutions, missing effects and poor frame rates were considered a low price to pay to play these then-new games on previous-gen hardware when the new-gen was out of reach. There was a longstanding tradition of developers supporting legacy platforms for a long time with new-gen games. /r/GamePhysics - Clips of game physics shining and glitchingĭesign based on /r/FlatBlue created by /u/creeschĪs grateful as I am to DF for its detailed and incisive coverage of game performance, I recall all too well the early days how DF's gross overexaggeration of platform differences (notably between PS3 and 360 back then) gave rise to a kind of mass "digital hypochondriasis", where suddenly people became hypersensitive to (and in many cases were claiming that they could actually recognize) minute frame rate inconsistencies, differences in post-processing effects such as AA, and resolution./r/gaming4gamers - middle ground between purely-for-fun and more serious subreddits./r/GamingLeaksAndRumours - Leaks and Rumors.Posting unmarked spoilers will result in removal and warning, and posting spoilers with malicious intent will result in a ban.
